Should You Wear a Veil on Your Wedding Day?
Veil or no veil?
The age old question in this new decade, where we are breaking away from old traditions and incorporating more of OURSELVES into our wedding day. About 50% of the brides I photograph wear veils on their wedding day - so there is a big move into the no veil movement!
If you are stuck in between deciding to wear a veil or not, here is a photographer’s perspective - and other veil alternatives you can try!!!
Adding Some Magic to Your Day:
Veils can be absolutely gorgeous and add something magical to your dress on your big day. Plus, VEIL PICTURES are soooooooo dreamy. Picking the right veil to compliment your *-+dress is important - if you want to show off the back of your dress, you might want to opt out of a /veil, as it hides your dress during the big reveal moment down the aisle! If you are wanting those beautiful veil photos, I would recommend getting a veil that is at least past your hips, preferably to your thighs or lower!
Difficult to Deal With
Veils can sometimes be a handful to deal with, especially on days with any type of wind. Often times, a veil will fall out multiple times during a day, unless you put a million bobby pins in to hold it down. They blow in every direction (and usually it ends up being in your face). Not to mention whenever someone hugs you or puts their hand on your back, you’ll get a not-so-nice tug in your hair - ouch! But these are all things we can work with - whether pinning your veil down TIGHT, finding creative ways to stop it from blowing everywhere, or just reminding people not to press down on the veil. Don’t let these reasons completely deter you from wearing a veil - but do keep them in mind if you are worried about stressing at all during your wedding day
Add Some Variety To Your Day
You also don’t have to wear your veil your entire day! Especially if you are doing a first look, you can start the day with no veil to really show off your dress! Then, you can put your veil on for the ceremony and pictures afterwards, and remove it for your reception. That way, you can add a variety to your photos, and don’t have to deal with wearing a veil your entire wedding day.
If you are someone who KNOWS they don’t want a veil (fun fact: that was me on my wedding day!), here are some gorgeous veil alternatives to look into:
Flower Crown - these are perfect for a boho or magical-feel for your day!
Flowers in Hair - I used baby’s breath on my wedding day and loved how delicate it looked. Plus, it’s a super cheap alternative to other hair pieces!
Hair Jewelry - sparkle and shine with these- check out pieces on Etsy to see a HUGE and affordable variety. You can go for something big, like a half crown, or just a small clip!
I hope with this guide, you’ll be able to decide whether or not you want a veil on your wedding - there’s no wrong answer on this! Whatever looks best for YOU and the look you are going for will always end up making you happy on your wedding day and years to come :)
