What To Do After You've Gotten Engaged

YOU’RE ENGAGED!!!!!!!!!!!! First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on such an amazing time in your life!  I’m sure you are feeling all of the feelings in the world - excitement, nervousness, joy, confusion, anticipation, and just plain overwhelmed.

After the shock goes away, you might be sitting back and wondering, what in the world do I do now?

If you are thinking this at all, then I’m here to help!  Here are some of the first steps you should take for wedding planning:

  • Figure out the time of year you want to get married.  Instead of picking a specific date (which limits your vendor choices right away), pick a month or time of year that you want to get married - that way, you can keep your options open when you start contacting vendors.

  • Make a budget based on priority.  Before you start vendor shopping, it’s important to make sure that you have a budget in mind - it’s definitely okay to dream and spend money, but you don’t want to get overwhelmed by costs you weren’t anticipating.  Prioritize the parts of your day that you feel are the most important to you, and list everything out with a separate budget - that way, you know when something is just too high above your price range.

  • Book your venue.  Even if your venue isn’t the most important part of your day on your list, you still should book your venue first - if you don’t have that, you won’t have anywhere to get married!  And then, you’ll have more exact dates to share with other vendors on your day.

  • Book your highly prioritized vendors.  Usually, vendors that you want to book right away are your photographer/videographer, catering, florist, and musician/DJ.  Most of these vendors can only do 1 wedding a day, so they will get booked up pretty quickly.

  • Sit back and enjoy your engagement season for a bit.

If you’ve finished everything above, then you’ve already done a ton of the heavy lifting for your wedding day.  Depending on how far away your wedding is, you might want to also start looking for a dress - but that’s the FUN part of wedding planning!  Now start enjoying this season for a bit (it isn’t that long) and soak up being a fiance!

What were some things you did right after you got engaged???
